Housing Choices Improved- 21 November 2009
Lin Thorp, MLC Minister for Human Services
The Minister for Human Services, Lin Thorp, today announced a new housing project in the south of Tasmania for people living with acquired brain injury and neurological conditions.
Fourteen new independent living units are currently under construction for people with acquired brain injury and neurological conditions under the Tasmanian Government’s social housing agenda.
Ms Thorp visited the site of the new development today at Hopkins Street, Moonah with Sue Hodgson, the President of the HOPES group today.
“The Moonah development is a culmination of years of hard work and effort by HOPES in its quest to ensure Tasmanians living with acquired brain injury or neurological conditions get all the help they can to live independently,” Ms Thorp said.
“The Rudd Government’s Nation Building Economic Stimulus Plan has provided the impetus for this vision to become reality through $4.38 million of funding.
“It’s such a pleasure to be involved in announcing such a worthwhile project which will help HOPES provide independent living for their target group in a location close to health care, local shopping and transport facilities.
“The Hopkins Street development will see 14 new homes built specifically for people with acquired brain injury or neurological disabilities.
“The HOPES Co-operative Living Concept will enable independent living for this group of people coupled with social interaction and access to community services.
“Each property will be able to be easily accessed by its residents and will promote a strong community network.
“It is anticipated that the units will be ready for its new residents no later than June 2010.
“This project will provide a much needed boost to the supply of social housing in southern Tasmania,” Ms Thorp said.
On a neighbouring site there will be a further 7 dwellings that will be handed over to Housing Tasmania to increase the supply of social housing for Tasmanians.
The Nation Building Economic Stimulus Plan is helping Tasmania to deliver 512 new social housing dwellings by mid 2012 and undertake repairs and maintenance and energy efficiency upgrades to 516 existing Housing Tasmania properties across the State.
“We are increasing access to affordable rental properties for low to middle income families in Tasmania, with 924 new dwellings being built by mid 2012 under the National Rental Affordability Scheme,” Ms Thorp said.
These projects compliment another State Government program aimed at increasing the opportunities for low to middle income Tasmanians to purchase their own home; the Quick Build Affordable Home Ownership Program.
“This is another example of the State Government getting on with the job of building more housing for Tasmanians in need,” Ms Thorp said.
