Young People in Nursing Homes (YPINH)

THE NATIONAL ALLIANCE is a nationwide association of younf people living in aged care facilities, their family members, fiends, and other concerned individuals and organisations who work together to make life in the community a reality for young people living in residential aged care.

A series of state and territory based Engine Rooms work at a local and state level to:

  • Raise awareness of the issue and the need for change in the public arena;
  • Work closely with state and territory governments and departments to develop the community based accommodation and support arrangements YPINH and their families want; and
  • Develop information and support networks for YPINH and their families.

The Alliance believes that the way to achieve the community based accommodation and support YPINH want, is to develop services around the needs of these young people. It is currently supporting two initiatives to develop an assessment tools that takes account of social, emotional and intellectual needs, as well as the needs these young people have around rehabilitation, community access and other disability services currently unavailable to them when they live in residential aged care.

The work of the Engine Rooms is coordinated at the national level by the Alliance's National Secretariat which providdes direction to them and recieves input from the Engine Rooms about state and local concerns. Each Engine Room takes responsibility for running the Secretariat in turn. At present, the National Secretariat is coordinated by the Victorian Engine Room in Melbourne.
